“To avoid disparities between what teachers learn in professional development work and what they can actually implement in their classrooms, schools should seamlessly link curriculum, assessment, standards, and professional learning opportunities. Research on effective professional development also highlights the importance of collaborative and collegial learning environments that help develop communities of practice able to promote school change beyond individual classrooms.”

— Linda Darling-Hammond and Nikole Richardson Research Review/Teacher Learning: What Matters?, 2009
