Advisories and Internships
- New Program!
Innovative Schools has partnered with Big Picture Learning to provide schools with professional development around key areas of The Big Picture High School Model that can help to improve student achievement. These workshops can be stand-alone on a single topic, or delivered in a series of workshops to cover multiple topics:
Building Advisories
In a high school advisory system, groups of students are well-known by an adult in the building who serves as their mentor and guide through the entire high school experience. At this workshop, participants will learn to create an advisory system that helps educators personalize each student’s academic and elective program to his/her goals and objectives - so much more than homeroom.
Learning through Interests (LtI)
Often connected to advisories, the LtI program responds to student interests to create a curriculum that takes advantage of out-of-school opportunities such as internships as well as developing in-school opportunities to develop special interests like entrepreneurial and video production experiences. Interest-based experiences are tied to instructional goals and performance-based assessments to engage students in real-world learning.
Authentic Assessment
Learn some of the ways Big Picture has implemented Authentic Assessments and update the way you assess student learning. Includes performance assessments, formative assessments, as well as discussion on getting the most from standardized testing and state level required assessments.
Post-Secondary Transition Planning
How are you preparing all of your students for success post high school? Learn successful techniques for helping students understand what they want to do post-high school, includes research review of practices with proven success.
Student Engagement
Are you losing kids because school isn’t engaging them? Learn some techniques that can be utilized immediately to get to know your students and find ways to tap into their interests and keep them in school. Includes curriculum ideas and resources to engage students.
School Culture
It all begins with relationships and building a strong school culture. This workshop includes tools and assessments to build your culture, and data points to know if what you are doing is working.
