What is a school’s brand?

A school’s brand is all of the symbols and experiences people associate with your school.  Brand is largely based on consumer perceptions, which can be shaped by things such as brochures, emails, newsletters, staff interactions, and direct services.  Each encounter gives rise to thoughts and feeling that help constituents form a judgment about what your school can offer their child.  When thinking about your brand, consider your school’s:

  • Attributes: What are the qualities (culture, academics, extracurricular activities) of your school?
  • Benefits: What benefits does your academic program offer students?
  • Values: What are your school’s values or principles?
  • Culture: What is your school’s culture and how does this impact the quality of the academic program?
  • Personality: What are characteristics or personality of the school?
  • User: Who would typically attend your school?

Why is branding important?

Delaware parents and students have a choice in their education.  If parents and students feel your school will meet their needs, they are more likely to enroll.   How does your school stand out from neighboring schools?  A strong brand is:

  • Targeted – Identify key stakeholders
  • Clear – Send clear and effective messaging
  • Consistent – Use consistent messaging
  • Recognizable – Develop branding that is recognizable; repeat this messaging and visual branding to create recognition
  • Actionable – use messaging and branding that compels action amongst key stakeholders
